Stop Leading With Your Degree, Start Leading With What You Can Do

That means your résumé needs to lead with demonstrated skills, not credentials. If you spent six months in a university cleanroom working with deposition or etch equipment, that belongs front and centre, not buried under your degree header. If your capstone project involved process characterization or yield analysis, describe the actual work: what equipment you used, what problem you were solving, what the outcome was. Hiring managers in semiconductor read dozens of résumés that say “strong analytical skills” and “attention to detail.” They remember the one that says “characterized thermal oxide growth rates on a tube furnace across five temperature setpoints and identified the optimal window for target thickness.”

Specificity is credibility. Generic is forgettable.

Cleanroom Experience Is Currency. Get More of It If You Can.

A candidate with 200 hours of cleanroom experience and a practical understanding of contamination control is easier to hire than one without it, regardless of what their transcript says.

If your degree is in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, or materials science, your fundamentals are closer to semiconductor-ready than you might think. It’s just how industries with tight professional communities operate. And it means that building your network before you need it is more valuable than trying to activate one after you’ve been job hunting for three months.

LinkedIn is the most practical starting point, but how you use it matters. Connecting with a hiring manager and immediately sending a message asking about job openings is rarely effective. Engaging genuinely with content from people in roles you’re targeting, commenting thoughtfully on industry topics, and sharing your own perspective on semiconductor topics you’re learning about, these build visibility over time in a way that makes an eventual direct outreach feel less cold.

Industry events are worth attending even early in your career. SEMICON West and regional semiconductor association events attract both operators and recruiters, and a brief in-person conversation with the right person can move your application from the pile to a real conversation faster than any résumé revision.

Don’t overlook your university network either. Professors with industry connections, alumni in semiconductor roles, and classmates who landed positions ahead of you are all warmer paths into a company than the career portal. One email to a former classmate asking for a 20-minute informational call can accomplish more than 40 applications.

What to Expect in the Interview Process

Semiconductor hiring tends to involve more technical depth than most recent graduates anticipate. For technician and process roles, expect scenario-based questions about troubleshooting methodology; they want to understand how you think through a problem, not just whether you know the right answer. For engineering roles, expect to discuss your academic or project work in specific technical detail, often with follow-up questions that probe how deeply you actually understand what you did.

Prepare to speak clearly about your hands-on experience, even if it’s limited. Interviewers for entry-level roles understand you’re early in your career. What they’re assessing is whether you’re technically curious, honest about the limits of your knowledge, and capable of learning quickly.
